Adult Education

As Catholics, we believe in the importance of both Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition in understanding the truths that God has revealed to us. Dei Verbum paragraph 9 says…

Hence there exists a close connection and communication between Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture. For both of them, flowing from the same divine wellspring, in a certain way merge into a unity and tend toward the same end. For Sacred Scripture is the word of God inasmuch as it is consigned to writing under the inspiration of the Divine Spirit, while Sacred Tradition takes the word of God entrusted by Christ the Lord and the Holy Spirit to the Apostles, and hands it on to their successors in its full purity, so that led by the Spirit of truth, they may in proclaiming it preserve this word of God faithfully, explain it, and make it more widely known. Consequently, it is not from Sacred Scripture alone that the Church draws her certainty about everything which has been revealed. Therefore, both Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture are to be accepted and venerated with the same sense of loyalty and reverence.

Since the Church encourages us to study both Scripture and Tradition, we try to offer a variety of educational opportunities. Through these, we study the truths of the Catholic faith, so we can grow in knowledge and in turn pass that knowledge on to others. These opportunities include…

Going With Faith Group

This group meets most Sunday mornings immediately following the 8:30am Mass in the Our Lady of Mercy Church Conference Room. The Going With Faith Group reviews the Church bulletin, discusses the homily, and offers prayers for those in need. Catholic books and videos are used as resources to help facilitate group discussion and to aid all in their faith journey. Beverages and donuts are provided. Please see the Church bulletin for specific dates and see below for the current topic of discussion.

The Going With Faith Group is currently working through the 2010 Apostolic Exhortation Verbum Domini (The Word of the Lord) and will be working through a series of videos during Lent.

Sunday Evening Adult Education

We occasionally offer a Sunday Evening Adult Education Series on various topics. These series are held on Sunday evenings from 7:00pm to 8:00pm in the Our Lady of Mercy Church Narthex. They usually run 3 to 4 weeks at a time, with a couple of weeks off in between. Please see the Church bulletin for dates and topics or check back here in the future, as dates and topics will be added as they come about.

March 3, March 10, and March 17 – Pope Saint John Paul II said in his encyclical Fides et Ratio (Faith and Reason), “Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth.”  If you would like to learn more about how faith and reason are compatible, please join us for our next adult education series.  This series will be led by Tully Borland.

Bible Study

Bible study is held on Thursday evenings from 7:00pm to 8:30pm in the Our Lady of Mercy Church Conference Room. The group works through Scripture a little at a time, making sure to provide time for discussion. Each meeting ends with Lectio Divina, which is a beautiful way to pray with Scripture. Lectio Divina involves reading, meditation, and contemplation. It is designed to help us understand God’s word and allow it to bring us closer to Him.

The Bible Study Group is currently working through the Gospel of Saint Matthew.

Philosophy Book Club

The Philosophy Book Club meets to discuss different books on Philosophy. They meet every other Saturday from 10:00am to 11:00am in the Our Lady of Mercy Church Conference Room.
